Cultural Awareness

As a student pursuing a certificate in International Communications at the University of Florida, I've worked to deepen my understanding of cross-cultural interactions in any professional setting. I'm also a proud Latina with roots in Puerto Rico and Cuba, and my cultural awareness is deeply ingrained in my identity and experiences. Growing up with such cultural influences has instilled in me a profound appreciation for the nuances of cultural heritage and the importance of fostering inclusivity and understanding across different communities. I have learned to value my own culture and those different from mine through such international experiences, whether that be studying abroad or visiting distant relatives in Panama.

One example of this skill that comes to mind is when I visited my brother in Rome and visited the Vatican Museums with him. The culture of the Vatican is a very religious, so I had to change what I was wearing that day to adhere to its policy of dressing conservatively. I was aware of what the Vatican represents, making sure to remain respectful while viewing all the art and turning off my phone inside the Sistine Chapel. We both had a great time and learned a lot about the history of the Vatican City.
